You’ve probably heard the terms “coupe” and “sedan” thrown around a lot. You may have wondered about the difference between a coupe and sedan. Judging from the questions we get from a lot of our Stephenville customers, you’re not alone. Are there advantages to buying a sedan vs. a coupe? We like for our customers to make informed choices when it comes to their new car purchases, so we’ve put together a coupe vs. sedan comparison below. If you have any more questions, the friendly staff at Bayer Auto Group of Comanche is here to help!
The main difference between coupes and sedans is that coupes are smaller than sedans. A car is technically classified as a coupe if it is a fixed-top with less than 33 cubic feet of rear interior space. So, sedans generally have more space for you and your passengers, especially back-seat passengers.
Usually a coupe has two doors, while a sedan has four. There are a few exceptions to this, with some manufacturers classifying some of their cars as two-door sedans or four-door coupes. Remember, the technical difference between coupes and sedans is the rear interior space. So, if a car has more than 33 cubic feet of rear space but has only two doors, it’s technically a sedan. These cars usually have very long doors.
While some coupes come with a rear seat that will fit two passengers, some coupes don’t. That means your car will only be able to fit yourself and one passenger. So, if you often carpool or need to haul your tribe around the greater Brownwood area, a sedan is probably the better choice.
Smaller cars usually have smaller engines, which deliver better fuel efficiency. So, if you rack up a lot of miles on our Abilene roads, then a coupe may be for you. This isn’t always the case. There are high-end coupes with a lot of horsepower, as well as some two-door muscle cars. But, generally, if you’re looking for a more powerful engine, you’ll be looking at a sedan.
